Their Formal Role & Accomplishments *
Brandon is a Cree filmmaker from Calgary who was commissioned to bring the vision of Committing: The Prelude to life. His role encompassed cinematography, directing the film shoot, and editing. He worked collaboratively with the youth and facilitators to ensure their truths were represented authentically on screen.
The Spirit They Bring
Brandon brings the spirit of modern Indigenous storytelling. He is a bridge between the raw, emotional power of the youth's lived experience and the technical craft of filmmaking. He approaches his work not as an outside director, but as a relative, listening deeply to ensure the camera captures not just images, but feeling and essence.
Key Characteristics
Collaborative Creator: He works with the youth, not just for them. He values their input on shots, angles, and feel, understanding that they are the experts of their own narrative.
Cultural Technician: He handles sensitive cultural material and personal trauma stories with immense respect and care, ensuring the process of filming is as safe and empowering as the final product.
Adaptable Innovator: He can produce profound work with a "lean crew" and a "run-and-gun" approach, proving that impactful storytelling is about heart and intention, not just big budgets.
What to Look For in Your Community
Look for a local filmmaker, videographer, or digital media artist who is embedded in or has a deep respect for the community. This is someone who knows how to use a camera to listen. They might run a local podcast, film community events, or teach media skills to youth. Their most important qualification is their humility and their desire to use their skills to amplify others' voices, not their own.
